The filter material is produced from the mineralised combustion product of the peel of tropical and subtropical fruits, in particular bananas and oranges, burnt at a temperature of 820 DEG C to 840 DEG C in an oxidising atmosphere with the exclusion of the formation of carbon, which combustion product, with support materials, is granulated or pressed to form shaped bodies.
