The invention relates to a method for the operation of a forging press with two manipulators which serve to guide an elongate forging, are arranged on opposite sides of the forging tools and each have a manipulator carriage, which is moved in the feed direction of the forging, and a pair of gripping tongs which is displaceable in a hydraulically damped fashion relative to the respective manipulator carriage in the feed direction of the forging. In order to achieve constant step lengths and a better forging result, a predetermined feed movement matched to the precalculated lengthening of the workpiece is imparted to the pulling manipulator carriage and, after each forging stroke, the pair of gripping tongs of the pulling manipulator carriage is automatically reset to its zero position. The deflection of the pulling pair of gripping tongs relative to its manipulator carriage caused by the lengthening of the workpiece is simultaneously taken up by the pair of gripping tongs of the pulled manipulator. In the pulled manipulator, the respective total tong deflection is measured and converted into a correction of the feed movement of this manipulator until the zero position of the pair of gripping tongs is correct again.
