In a front fork lift truck it is proposed to prevent the steering axle from being so sharply relieved, due to sudden braking from forwards travel and/or due to an excessive load carried on the front fork or to an excessive load centre distance, that safe steering is no longer assured. For this purpose the axle load resting on the steering axle 80 is measured and the measured value signal is fed to a control element 37 for the brake device and/or the drive system 1, 3, 6. <IMAGE>
