PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF CARBOXYLIC ACID FROM ISOBUTYRYL FLUORIDE FORMED BY CARBONYLATION

A carboxylic acid is produced by hydrolyzing a mixt. comprising an acyl fluoride (I) with less than the amt. of water required to hydrolyze the entire(I) in the mixt. to carboxylic acid, under conditions in which the carboxylic acid is formed and the acid is regenerated from the anion. Hydrolysis is effected at 20-150≦̸C and 1- 1340 bars. The acyl fluoride (I) is formed by reacting CO, anhydrous HF acid and an organic cpd. capable of reacting with CO and HF acid. The ratio of HF acid to (I) is 0.01-95.5 pts. wt. acid to 99.09-4.5 pts. wt. (I). The organic acid is an olefin having up to 20C and at least one double bond to form an acylium anion.
