In the case of a high-voltage power circuit breaker having a stationary (22) and an axially displaceable consumable contact (12), having a compression device (7) for compressed gas, having a nozzle (4) through which the switching-off arc (5) burns and through which the compressed gas flows from a compression space into an expansion space, and having a coil (3) through which the switching-off current flows, it is intended to improve the extinguishing capability without having to enlarge the dimensions of the compression device (7) and of the coil (3). This is achieved in that the coil (3) is arranged in the region of the nozzle constriction and surrounds the switching-off arc (5) coaxially. These measures result in axial magnetic blasting of the arc (5) in the high-pressure region of the switching path and in the region of the nozzle constriction, as a result of which energy is pumped out of the magnetic field into a disordered turbulent gas movement, resulting in the arc (5) being severely torn to pieces. Surrounding fresh gas now passes through the arc (5) to a large extent, even in the case of a small amount of compressed-gas and magnetic blasting, and said arc (5) is reliably extinguished. <IMAGE>
