A low cost noise reduction circuit has a first line signal path called the main-path whose gain is greater than the unit, and a second path called the auxiliary path, which limits the maximum signal amplitude of the main-path. A compressor, using lower unit gain positive feedback, has high Nyquist stability. The expander, employing an open loop, has complementary characteristics to the compressor. The auxillary input of the compressor is the main-path output of the compressor and its output is added to the main-path.
