Compds. of the formula (I) [R,R1 = C1-4 alkyl; RR1 = (CH2)4, (CH2)5, (CH2)6, CH2CHMeCH2, CH2CH2OCH2CH2 and their acid addn. salts, ethers, esters were prepd. by acylating benzothiophene (II) with an acylating agent (III) [R4 = Cl or Br in the presence of AlCl3 or AlBr3 and then treating the prodn. with methionine or with compds. of the formula X-S-Y [X = H or C1-4 alkyl, Y = C1-4 alkyl or phenyl to give (I). The compds. are useful for estrogenic, antiestrogenic and anti-androgenic therapy and may also be useful as anticancer and anti-fertility drugs.
