Apparatus for measurement by ultra-sound of the level and/or the volume of a liquid in a container, comprising an emitter-receiver cell (10) adapted to emit ultrasonic waves in an acoustic wave guide respectively towards the surface of a liquid whose level is to be measured and towards a reference surface (5) disposed at a predetermined know distance from the cell, means (11, 13) for excitation of the cell, and means (11, 14, 15) for measuring the times which elapse between excitation of the cell and the reception thereby of the echoes of the wave emitted at the surface of the liquid and the reference surface respectively, characterised in that said cell (10) is interposed in the acoustic wave guide between a measuring portion (2) extending substantially along the line of the body of the container (1) and a reference portion (3) which is terminated at its end opposite to the cell by a reflector (5) disposed with the cell (10) and the reference portion (3) in a zone of the container where it is always immersed in the liquid.
