PURPOSE:To measure the concn. of an oxidizing agent such as residual chlorine in water with high accuracy by constituting an electrode by treating the surface of noble metal (platinum or gold) with platinum black or palladium black and metallic electrode to be oxidized such as silver into a galvanic electrode. CONSTITUTION:Fine metallic particles of platinum black or palladium black are electrodeposited or coated on the surface of the noble metal such as platinum or gold, by which the surface thereof is treated and the electrode (platinum) is manufactured. The metal to be oxidized such as silver is used as a counter electrode (silver). A cell in which chlorine-contg. water is used as an electrolyte is constituted when both electrodes are dipped into residual chlorine-contg. water. The residual chlorine (hypochlorous acid, etc.) attracts electron and decomposes the same to hydrochloric acid and oxygen with the platinum electrode. The silver is formed to silver oxide by the silver electrode and electric current flows as a result of such reaction. The surface of the noble metal is treated with the platinum black, etc. to form the electrode and therefore the generated current is large and the detection of the concn. of the residual chlorine with high accuracy is made possible. |
