PURPOSE:To enable uniform drawing of a glass fiber from a spinning furnace, and the threading of the glass fiber through a forming die of a precoating device, smoothly without causing the breakage of the fiber, by placing an assistant capstan between the spinning furnace and the precoating device. CONSTITUTION:Glass fiber 3 is drawn from the spinning furnace 1 along the direction of the arrow G at a constant speed while being pressed with a pair of rollers 32, 33 of the assistant capstan 31, and is passed successively through the positioning die 14 and the forming die 8 of the precoating device 7 until the end of the fiber reaches the main take-up capstan placed at the downstream side of the precoating device 7. When the takeup of the glass fiber by the main take- up capstan is started, the roller 33 is shifted along the direction of the arrow E to separate the rollers 32 and 33 and to stop the delivering action of the assistant capstan 31. Quick and smooth threading of the optical fiber can be carried out by this process, and the efficiency of the threading operation can be improved preventing the breakage of the fiber. |
