<p>PURPOSE:To obtain ethynyl alcohol useful as nonionic surface-active agents, various synthetic intermediates, etc., in high yield, by reacting a ketone with acetylene in the presence of a specific alkyl-2-imidazolidinone compound as a solvent. CONSTITUTION:Ethynyl alcohol of formula III is obtained by reacting ketones of formula II (R1 and R2 are 2-20C alkyl, alkenyl, aryl, etc), e.g. methyl ethyl ketone, with acetylene in the presence of an alkali catalyst, using alkyl-2-imidazolidinone compound of a compound of formula I (R3 and R4 are 1-3C alkyl; R5 is H or methyl), e.g. 1,3-dimethyl-2-imidazolidinone, as a solvent. Said solvent dissolves acetylene and the alkali catalyst well and moreover is stable to alkalis.</p> |
