PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet image forming apparatus in which a distance between a printing head and a surface of a sheet always becomes constant even when a thickness of the sheet is changed without deviating, wrinkling or breaking the sheet without using a sheet thickness detecting sensor or the like. SOLUTION: A sheet retaining member 30 having a length longer than a printing range of a sheet P in parallel with a reciprocatingly moving direction of a carriage 21 and a width h from a lower edge 30a to an upper edge 30b being at least constant in the printing range is mounted on a platen 7. At a printing time of the printing head 20, the carriage 21 is moved while retaining the upper edge 30b of the member 30 by its own weight of the carriage 21 by a pressing member 22. Thus, the distance between the head and the surface of the sheet is always held constant, and the deviation, wrinkle, breakage or the like of the sheet during printing can be prevented. Since the sensor or the like is not required, its cost can be suppressed to a low value as well.
