PURPOSE:To obtain a polymer which can give a molding having high strength and modulus and excellent heat resistance, by reacting 2,5-diamino-1,4-dithiophenol diphosphate with an aromatic dicarboxylic acid compound in polyphosphoric acid. CONSTITUTION:2,5-Diamino-4-dithophenol diphosphate (DAT-phosphate) is reacted with an aromatic dicsrboxylic acid compound in an amount approximately equivalent to that of the phosphate in polyphosphoric acid. Examples of the aromatic dicarboxylic acid compounds include compounds of the formula: XOC- Ar-COX, wherein Ar is a group of the formula (wherein Y is CH3 or the like and m is 0-4), or the like, and X is Cl or OH. The DAT-diphosphate is obtained by, for example, adding phosphoric acid to a dil. hydrochloric acid solution of DAT hydrochloride and separating the formed salt. In this process, the polymerization is carried out in an inert gas atmosphere such as a nitrogen stream or in a vacuum. It is suitable to minimize the exposure of the polyphosphate and the aromatic dicarboxylic acid compound to air as much as possible.
