PURPOSE:To suppress foaming and to improve the strength of the image guide by providing a process of ampule production and a process of flame polishing for the manufacture of the image guide. CONSTITUTION:Plural optical braid rods 2 are arranged in a bottomed cylindrical quartz glass pipe 1 whose one end surface is closed while end surfaces are arrayed axially. Then, a quartz glass pipe 3 for sealing whose one end is made thin is butt-welded to the opening end side of the quartz glass pipe 1, a part A at the one end side which is made thin is connected to a vacuum pump to produce vacuum in the quartz glass pipe 1, and the part A is welded and sealed in the pressure reduction state, producing an ampule. Then, the quartz glass pipe 1 is made solid to manufacture an image guide base material 5. This is polished in flames with an oxyhydrogen burner 6, etc., and heated and drawn in an electric furnace 4 to manufacture the image guide 7.
