PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having a good erasing characteristic without the need for increasing recording current for a video disk, etc. by providing a magnetic layer incorporated therein with specific wt% or above of Ni with respect to the total content of a metallic component to a magnetic material consisting of iron nitride or iron alloy nitride. CONSTITUTION:A magnetic paint prepd. by dispersing magnetic material powder incorporated therein with >=10wt% Ni atoms with respect to the total content of the metallic component in a binder resin soln. is coated, if necessary via a primer 2, on a substrate 1 and a magnetic field is impressed, if necessary, to the coating to orient the magnetic powder, thereby forming the magnetic layer 3 on the magnetic material consisting of the iron nitride or iron alloy nitride. Coercive force is made as low as about 700-800 Oe and satd. magnetization is decreased as well by the incorporation of the Ni at a specific rate into said magnetic layer. The satd. magnetization sigmas is still substantially large, thus the magnetic recording medium having high residual magnetic flux density (Br), high hardness, high stability and good electrical conductivity and hiding power is obtd.
