PURPOSE:To stabilize tape carrying operation at all times by intermitting tracking control when a frequency of a reproduced pilot signal is deviated and carrying a magnetic tape at a prescribed speed. CONSTITUTION:When the speed of rotary heads 6, 7 is fluctuated due to overload during reproduction and a pilot signal of normal frequency is not obtained, a control circuit 10 detects that the speed of the heads 6, 7 is deviated from the speed at recording and brings the signal S1 to a low level. Since a constant voltage power supply is set to a voltage nearly equal to a tracking error signal obtained at normal tracking, a control circuit 13 holds the running speed of the tape 1 to the constant speed nearly similar to normal tracking by using a speed signal only obtained from a speed detector of a capstant drive motor 2.
