PURPOSE:To simplify the constitution of a type selecting mechanism as well as reduce the cost of the mechanism by a method in which the second gear having a sufficient length in the axial direction is engaged with the first gear device regardless of the axial position of the shaft for positioning the rotary direction of the type head. CONSTITUTION:A rotary motor 50 is fixed to a frame 31, and a gear 51 as the second gear is pressed into the shaft and engaged with a gear 34 integrated with the shaft 33 by an adequate back lash. The gear 51 having a sufficient length toward the vertical direction is engaged with the gear 34 regardless of the position of the shaft 33. Since the number of teeth of the gear 34 is equalized with the number of letters in the turning direction of a type head 12, a detent lever 65 is engaged with the gear 34 each types 12a are selected in the turning direction and thereby exact positioning is made. Since the motor and the rotary shaft of the types are in gear-connection, standard motor for the motor can be used, the cost can be reduced, and the constitution can be markedly simplified.
