PURPOSE:Titanium slag which is formed on the production of pig iron from ilmenite is used to utilize an impurity contained in it whereby titanium fiber is obtained. CONSTITUTION:Titanium slag and naturally occurring rutile or anatase sand are mixed in such an amount as the former is less than 3/1 in weight. When the resulting mixture is represented in formula I, it is mixed with potassium oxide or a compound forming the same by heating (in some cases, a mixture of both) so that the mixture meets the formula II, then melted by heating. Fibrous material of layer-structured crystals which is same as potassium dititanate of formula III is formed from the melt, treated with an acid to extract potassium component to form crystalline titanate fiber. Then, the fiber is heat-treated at a temperature over 500 deg.C, but lower than the melting point to give the objective titania fiber.
