PURPOSE:To extract easily and securely a character intersection and a branch point by extracting strokes of a character pattern, and extracting intersection and branch points of the characters from connection relations between the respective strokes. CONSTITUTION:An image memory 10 stores a preprocessed and binary-coded character patterns. A stroke extracting circuit 11 traces the character pattern to extract substrokes and then extract strokes of the character from pairing between the substrokes. A connection point extracting circuit 12 checks connection relations between the respective strokes to extract connection points. A stroke extracting circuit 11 outputs information on each stroke terminal point, and a connection point extracting circuit 12 outputs information on the connection points, so that the results are stored in a RAM13. Then, a CPU14 controls the extracting circuits 11 and 12 to extract the character intersection and the branch point.
