PURPOSE:To prevent the generation of sagging and to manufacture efficiently the titled remelted and hardened cam by remelting and hardening the cam surface of a cam made of cast iron excluding bodh ends, and then grinding and removing the vicinity of said ends by chamfering when the cam surface is finished by grinding. CONSTITUTION:The cam surface 1 of a cam shaft made of cast iron is roughly ground at the preceding stage, and the cam surface 1 excluding the vicinity of both ends 2 and 2 of the cam surface 1 is melted by plasma arc, etc. to form a chilled layer 4. Simultaneously, parts 6 and 6 each of which is 0.5-1.0mm. from the side surface 5 of the cam is not remelted and hardened, are formed. When the cam surface 1 with a formed chilled layer 4 is finished by grinding, said parts 6 and 6 which are not remelted and hardened are chamfered 7 and 7 along with porous parts, etc. The cam whose cam surface 1 is remelted and hardened over the full width of the cam surface 1 and having excellent abrasion resistance can be obtained in this way. |
