PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as an intermediate of perfumes, pharmaceuticals, etc. economically in a improved yield, suppressing the formation of the by-products, without necessitating the hydrogen reduction treatment of the catalyst, by using a zinc compound as a catalyst of the vapor-phase reaction of an alkanolamine. CONSTITUTION:The alkanolamine of formula I (R<1> and R<2> are H or alkyl) is used as a raw material, and is subjected to the vapor-phase reaction in the presence of a catalyst containing zinc compound, e.g. zinc oxide catalyst or zinc oxide-copper oxide catalyst, preferably in the presence of a diluent such as steam, nitrogen, etc., at 200-500 deg.C, especially at 250-450 deg.C, to obtain the compound of formula II. The compound of formula I is e.g. ethanolamine, 2-hydroxy- 3-aminobutane, 2-hydroxybutylamine, etc. The reaction is carried out by introducing the vaporized compound of formula I into a reactor such as a fixed bed reactor packed with the catalyst and maintained at a specific temperature, and containing the raw material with the catalyst.
