On a ring spinning or twisting machine having, on each of the two longitudinal sides, a row of spindles which can be driven jointly by a single tangential belt 13, a driven roller 42, 43 for driving the tangential belt is arranged each time in the two longitudinal end regions of the machine and at at least one other location between these. The other location is in the region of the virtually straight portion of the tangential belt and has no winding round or only small windings round. Energy is transmitted by a push or slight winding round the tangential belt on a frictional drive roller by means of a pressure roller 40, 41, 14.
