PURPOSE:To provide a granulation agent for powdery coal-water slurry capable of remarkably promoting the granulation and facilitating the removal of ash and inorganic components, by using the polymer of sulfonated dicyclopentadiene as a granulation agent. CONSTITUTION:An aqueous slurry of coal powder is added with an oil as a binder and granulated in water. In the above process, the system is incorporated with a granulation agent consisting of a (co)polymer of sulfonated dicylopentadiene of formula (M is H, alkali metal, alkaline earth metal, ammonium or amine; n is 1 or 2) and having a weight-average molecular weight of preferably >=500 (especially 1,000-10,000). The amount of the granulation agent is usually 0.01-5wt%, preferably 0.05-2%.
