PURPOSE:To improve the charge-and-discharge efficiency of a redox flow battery by separating the positive and the negative electrodes by a diaphragm and supplying an anolyte and a catholyte thermally treated at a temperature of at least 80 deg.C. CONSTITUTION:A positive cell 1a containing a positive electrode 3 and a negative cell 1b containing a negative electrode 4 are separated by a diaphragm 2. An anolyte 13 prepred by dissolving FeCl2 in 4N hydrochloric acid solution is fed into the positive cell 1a from tanks 11 and 12 and a catholyte 23 prepared by dissolving CrCl3 in 4N hydrochloric acid solution is fed into the negative cell 1b from tanks 21 and 22, thereby constituting a redox flow battery. The anolyte 13 and the catholyte 23 are used after being thermally treated in a pressurized autoclave to a temperature of at least 80 deg.C. Therefore, the thermal treatment of the electrolyte solution changes the structure of the complex ions participating in electrode reaction. Consequently, the efficiency of the battery can be improved. |
