PURPOSE:To improve the contact characteristics of an Ag-Bi-Sn oxide type contact material without deteriorating the machinability by adding specified amounts of In, Ni and Mg, Ti or a rare earth element to the contact material. CONSTITUTION:The composition of an electrical contact material contg. Bi-Sn oxide dispersed in the Ag matrix is composed of, by weight, 1.5-6.0% Bi, 0.5- 4.0% Sn, 1.0-6.0% In, 0.1-0.5% Ni, 0.0-0.05% one or more among Mg, Ti and a rate earth element, and the balance Ag when expressed in terms of metals. Metallic components giving said composition are melted, formed into an ingot, and crushed into powder. This powder is molded and sintered. During the sintering, the molded body is internally oxidized to obtain an electrical contact material. This contact material is superior to a conventional Ag-CdO contact material in both welding and consumption resistances. |
