PURPOSE:To improve the activity of interferon or impart the activity thereto, by treating the interferon with a protein denaturaing agent, diluting the treated interferon with a buffer solution containing a mineral acid salt, adsorbing the diluted interferon on an inorganic adsorbent, and eluting the adsorbed interferon. CONSTITUTION:Interferon is treated with a protein denaturing agent in >=4mol concentration, e.g. urea or guanidine, and then diluted with a buffer solution with a mineral acid salt to give <=1mol concentration of the above-mentioned protein denaturing agent. The resultant diluted solution is then adsorbed on an inorganic adsorbent, e.g. silica based adsorbent, and eluted with an eluent, e.g. alkaline buffer solution at >=8pH or acidic buffer solution at <=3pH, to give the aimed inteferon having improved activity in the eluate. This method is particularly useful for interferon, produced by cultivating a microorganism obtained by the recombinant DNA technique, and having no activity or improving the activity of inactivated interferon.
