PURPOSE:To produce the titled compound useful as a raw material of polymer, with a simple process, by the dehydration reaction of methacrylic acid or acrylic acid with a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group in the presence of an acid catalyst at or above a specific temperature. CONSTITUTION:Methacrylic acid or acrylic acid and a compound having phenolic hydroxyl group (e.g. phenol, p-chlorophenol, etc.) are subjected to the dehydration reaction in the presence of an acid catalyst such as sulfuric acid or a combination of sulfuric acid and boric acid, etc. at >=110 deg.C [especially >=110 deg.C and below the boiling point of the (meth)acrylic acid] to obtain the phenyl ester of methacrylic acid or acrylic acid. The dehydration reaction is carried out while introducing air into the reaction system to prevent the polymerization. After the completion of the reaction, the catalyst and the unreacted raw material are removed easily only by washing with an alkali. A colorless transparent titled compound can be produced only by distilling the product after washing. USE:Raw material of a polymer having high refractive index, low moisture absorption and high heat-resistance.
