A current-limiting circuit breaker is disclosed, having at least one stationary contact piece (1) and at least one moving contact piece (4) which can be lifted off the stationary contact piece (1) by electrodynamic forces. In order to produce a major simplification, cost reduction and reduction in size and in order to provide strengthening for the protection of the conductor sections having a relatively low short-circuit strength in low-voltage switching installations, it is provided that the moving contact piece (4) be lifted off the stationary contact piece (1) exclusively by electrodynamic forces. It is furthermore provided that the moving contact piece (4) be lockable after being lifted off the stationary contact piece (1) and be capable of being moved back into the original position, by means of contact compression springs (5), once the lock has been released. <IMAGE>
