To prevent errors in the visual acquisition of the readings on the levelling staff and of the horizontal angle at the horizontal angle ocular, a restrictor which can be moved to both sides of the longitudinal axis is attached to the levelling staff, which is coupled to an electro-optical incremental scale and which is shifted to the top or bottom by such an amount that the zero marker on the restrictor corresponds to the aiming line of the levelling instrument in order to then output the digital measurement value of the staff to a computer. Because the levelling instrument is aligned with the levelling staff, the horizontal angle is at the same time also output in digital form to a computer by an electro-optical angle encoder. The horizontal distance is also determined in the same work cycle by the fact that on the restrictor a reflector is installed which reflects the measuring beam sent out by an electro-optical rangefinder mounted on the levelling instrument in order to output the linear distance thus obtained in digital form to a computer.
