The invention relates to a method and an apparatus for depositing and stacking sheets, especially folded and printed sheets. The sheets are successively transported to a point of deposition and deposited on a supporting element B which can be lowered. The lowermost of the loosely deposited sheets are separated from the other sheets by insertion of a separating and supporting element. The partial pile formed in this way is lowered and compressed from above by means of a pressing element, and, once the supporting element has been removed, added under pressure to the sheets which are already held by another pressing element working alternately with the first pressing element and are used to form a packet. In this way and by these means, as the sheets are continuously deposited at the stacking point, the lowermost sheets of the loosely deposited sheets are in each case separated from the other sheets and fed to the sheets held under pressure, until enough sheets have been assembled to form a packet. <IMAGE>
