A consumer connected to the electrical supply mains is remotely controlled via a telephone network. To achieve the control without setting up a telephone connection and without a special transmitter, the ringing signals are transmitted from the dialled-up telephone set to a receiver to which a decoder is connected downstream. The decoder registers the number of ringing signals received and activates the consumer if the number matches a preset desired value. <IMAGE>
