In this process for treating or processing solid and viscous, sparingly soluble, in particular highly viscous, hydrocarbon-containing substances or the like, such as waste oil, oil sludges, acid sludges, acidic tars and also, for example, oil etc. in which their various constituents are at least partially separated from each other or leached out, the starting materials to be treated are mixed together under the influence of physical energy, in particular mechanical energy of a release agent simultaneously reacting with the same, divided or digested again, as a result of the reaction occuring, into at least partially suspendible constituents and the resulting mixture is mechanically separated by mass forces acting thereon; while the apparatus for carrying out the process is composed of at least one reactor which is furnished with inlets for the starting material to be treated, for example acid sludge and other starting materials, nozzles for the chemically active separating agent and an outlet for the reaction product, this reactor being connected on the one hand to the tanks for the starting material to be treated, for the further starting material and for the chemically active separating agent via piping, in which pumps are connected, and, on the other hand, being connected to a separator via a pipe.
