A water vapor permeable disposable dressing comprises a first adhesive contact layer 20 covering an inner surface of a thin film backing 18. A release layer 40 covering the first adhesive contact layer 20 is removed prior to application of the dressing, and the film backing 18 preferably has an edge portion 56 free of adhesive 20 to aid in the removal of the release layer 40 from the dressing without touch contaminating the underside of the dressing. A relatively rigid carrier section 22 is secured to the outer surface of the film backing 18 by a second adhesive layer 24, and the carrier section 22 includes 2 rigid handles 32 which aid in keeping the dressing extended during application of the dressing to a skin surface and prevents the dressing from curling or folding up. Also disclosed is a method for applying the dressing to a patient such as to cover a wound or to secure an intravenous catheter. |
