PURPOSE:To couple optically a semiconductor laser and an optical waveguide easily by performing die bonding between the first and the second metallic electrodes so that the optical axis of a laser capturing part of a laser active layer and that of a core layer are parallel with each other. CONSTITUTION:A window layer 5 of a semiconductor laser is opened in a part of a thin clad layer 4 just on a laser active layer 2 and is formed with a semiconductor whose refractive index is higher than refractive indexes of clad layers 3 and 4 and is equal to the refractive index of the laser active layer 2. The refractive index of a window layer 13 is set to a value higher than refractive indexes of clad layers 10-12 and equal to the refractive index of a core layer 9, and refractive indexes of the laser active layer 2 and the core layer 9 are equalized approximately. A metallic electrode 14 is vapor-deposited around the window layer 13 on the surface of an optical waveguide (b), and an electrode 7 of the semiconductor laser (b) and the electrode 14 of the optical waveguide are subjected to die bonding. Thus, electrodes 7 and 14 are connected electrically, and the laser active layer 2 and the core layer 9 are coupled optically through window layers 5 and 13. |
