A composite material for use as shock absorber, as bushings or the like having controlled friction characteristics of a layer bonded to a metal substrate is formed by applying a particulate composition of a thermoplastic synthetic resin and carbon fibers having a maximum length of 1 mm to the substrate and heating it to a temperature of 50 DEG to 70 DEG K. above the melting temperature of the synthetic resin.
