<p>A filtration system, especially for edible oils, utilizing a plurality of coaxial, vertically disposed, hollow disc filter elements for clarifying a liquid passed therethrough. Upon the accumulation of a predetermined amount of materials on or in the filter cake, the filter chamber is sealed and the contents drained creating a pressure differential across the filter elements to maintain the integrity of the filter cake. The chamber is then positively pressurized with a gas to dry the expended filter cake on the filter septum prior to its removal and conveyance from the chamber. The chamber is filled with liquid and the filter septum scrubbed to remove any residual materials therefrom. Filter aid material is added to the liquid in the chamber and the liquid circulated through the filtration system in a closed loop at a flow rate sufficient to maintain the integrity of the filter cake so formed until it has removed a sufficient amount of accumulants from the influent to create a pressure differential thereacross which will maintain its integrity on the filter septum at the influent flow rate.</p> |
