The purpose of the present invention is to transform a hazardous residue containing Cr(VI) (chromates) into a harmless material. The invention consists in a batch process characterized in that it comprises mixing a material polluted with Cr(VI) together with a reducing agent and an acid, these two latter elements being products, byproducts or corrosive residues having a reducing activity in order to produce a stable material by a friendly process which besides not generating effluents, presents a low energy consumption. The end product results in a mineral material which is free of hazardous substances, thereby being useful for manufacturing bricks, and for being confined or mixed together with a compost so as to be used as soil. The ratio of polluted material to water is from about 1:1 (weight/weight) to about 1:2 (weight/weight) respectively; additional basic materials are not required to achieve a final pH of from about 5 to about 7.
