PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium which decreases running friction and has an excellent head touch characteristic, running durability, still durability, etc. by forming a top coat layer contg. specific long chain carboxylic acid and long chain unsatd. chain hydrocarbon on a magnetic layer of a continuous thin film type. CONSTITUTION:The top coat layer contg. preferably the straight chain fatty acid expressed by formula (R is an alkyl of 9-21C) and the unsatd. straight chain olefin of 10-22C is formed to <=300Angstrom thickness by a vapor deposition method on the magnetic layer which is provided on a base body contg. Co or 1-3 kinds among Ni, Cr and O and is aggregated with the particles of the columnar crystal structure formed by vapor deposition, etc. on the base diagonally to the normal of the magnetic layer. The excellent magnetic recording medium which decreases the running friction, has high film strength and good head touch, decreases drop-out and maintains the still durability without deterioration particularly at a low temp. is thus obtd.
