PURPOSE:To reduce a silicon hydride, easily, in high yield, by reacting a specific silicon compound with the co-crushed product of a transition metal and a alkali metal or alkaline earth metal. CONSTITUTION:(A) A silicon compound of formula I (x>=1; y<=2x+2; z<=2x; either y or z is not 0; when x=1, z is not 0) having one or more Si-H bonds or Si-Si bonds in a molecule is dissolved in a solvent (e.g. diethyl ether) containing a small amount of water or alcohol.(B) an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide is co-crushed with 0.0001-1.000pts of a transition metal (e.g. Pd) based on 1pt. of the hydroxide to obtain a transition metal dispersed in or supported on the alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. The hydroxide is suspended in the above solution of the silicon compond, and the components are reacted with each other in an atmosphere of H2 gas, etc. under atmospheric or positive pressure at 0-100 deg.C to obtain the silicon hydride of formula II (l is 1-x).
