NEW MATERIAL:The polyhydric alcohol compound of formula (R1 and R2 are same or different alkyl). EXAMPLE:The bicyclo-orthoester compound of formula II. USE:Useful as an adhesive. It can be used in a wide range such as paint, grassfiber-reinforced plastics, etc., and is also applicable widely as a hot-melt adhesive having excellent adhesivity to the adherend and high durability. PREPARATION:The compound of formula I can be prepared by hydrolyzing the bicyclo-orthoester compound of formula III. The compound of formula III is also novel, and can be synthesized by reacting the orthoester compound of formula IV(R3 is alkyl, R4, R4' and R4'' are same or different alkyl) with dipentaerythritol of formula V in a solvent such as dioctyl phthalate, using p-toluenesulfonic acid, etc. as a catalyst.
