PURPOSE:To produce a silicon hydride, easily, in high yield, by reacting a specific silicon compound with an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide. CONSTITUTION:(A) A silicon compound of formula I (x>=1; y<=2x+2, z<=2x; either y or z is not 0; when x=1, z is not 0) having one or more Si-H bonds or Si-Si bonds in a molecule and (B) 0.0001-100mol of an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal hydroxide (e.g. NaON) based on 1mol of Si in the component A are dissolved or dispersed in a solvent such as water, alcohl, ether, etc. (e.g. diethyl ether). The components are reacted with each other in an atmosphere of H2 gas, etc. under atmospheric or positive pressure at 0-100 deg.C to obtain the silicon hydride of formula II (l is 1-x).
