The method involves subjecting water based inks to a pre-treatment solution (3) provided on a substrate (1) and an initiator is provided in the pre-treatment solution. The pre-treatment solution physically or chemically induces an adequate rapid inhibition of flow of ink that is applied to the substrate and/or a support material with relation to a defined color distribution. Independent claims are also included for: (a) composition of the pre-treatment solution; and (b) ink composition.
