PURPOSE:To improve color reproducibility at a low brightness part and also to obtain a natural color image for a high brightness part by controlling the levels of color difference signals generated from modulated components in respective scanning line signals with a luminance signal. CONSTITUTION:A modulated component B+R is present on the (n)th scanning line obtained from the solid-state image pickup element 1 and a modulated component B-R is present on the (n+1)th scanning line; and a band-pass filter 17 separates those modulated components. On the other hand, the 1st narrow-band low-frequency component VL separated by a low-pass filter 18 from the output of the solid-state image pickup element 1 is modulated by a modulator 19 to generate a modulated YL signal. The 1st modulated color difference signal is obtained from a subtractor 21 and the 2nd modulated color difference signal (B-Y)+ or -DELTAYL is obtained from an adder 23. Those two modulated color difference signals are supplied to multipliers 24 and 25. The multipliers 24 and 25 are supplied with the 2nd narrow-band low-frequency component YN separated by a low-pass filter 26 from the output signal of the solid-state image pickup element 1; when YN is smaller, the levels of the two modulated color difference signals are increased and when YN is larger, the levels are decreased.
