PURPOSE:To obtain a magnetic recording medium having excellent running property, durability, etc. by providing a top coat layer having specific components on the surface of a thin film. CONSTITUTION:The top coat layer contg. a vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate copolymer resin contg. >=2% maleic acid or vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymer resin contg. >=2% maleic acid and if necessary, contg. further a rust preventive agent and lubricating agent is provided on the surface of the thin ferromagnetic film. The magnetic recording medium which is low in a friction level, is less chipped and has excellent rust preventiveness, corrosion resistance, durability and running stability is thus obtd.
