For making a vertical hole in the earth, especially for fitting a subterranean fix point marker under a road or street, a vehicle 2 is used carrying a guide frame 16 for a hole-forming tool 18, 20. In order to enable the guide frame 16 to be easily set to the perpendicular and in order simultaneously to ensure that the frame, at the bottom, is pressed hard against the ground, the actual frame 16, 58 is fitted on the vehicle such that it can be forcibly lowered, which vehicle further has a pair of lowerable supporting legs 8 and 10, such that the vehicle can be lifted on a three-point support into such a position in which the vehicle stands horizontally and hence the guide frame stands vertically regardless of the tilt of the ground. <IMAGE>
