The invention relates to a process for reducing the iron and manganese contents of groundwater or surface water flowing through an aquifer or through a reservoir or a filter containing filter material present in nature. Water containing oxygen or substances releasing oxygen is introduced intermittently through a number of injection pipes or wells 1-9 arranged around an extraction well or extraction pipe 10 for purified water. When water containing oxygen is introduced the said water is only fed to some of the said injection pipes or wells 1-9 and water is simultaneously withdrawn from near-by, adjacent or intermediate injection pipes or wells 1-9.
