PURPOSE:To suitably select a desired picture image, by inverting the transferring direction of a magnetic head when tracks, on which signals are effectively recorded, are not detected continuously for a prescribed number. CONSTITUTION:An envelope detecting circuit 38 detects the envelope of FM- modulated video signals recorded on the track of a recording body 16 and outputs voltages corresponding to the detected envelope to an output 42. An AD converter (ADC)46 has 256 quantizing levels and outputs 8-bit data to a control device 60 in response to the request of the control device 60. Tracking control is performed by counting the number of tracks, namely, the number of peaks of the envelope according as the head is transferred by using an original returning position HP as a reference.
