PURPOSE:To reduce the capacity of a ''KANJI'' (Chinese character) recognizing dictionary memory sharply by using the recognized result of reading ''KANA'' (Japanese syllabary) corresponding to the ''KANJI'' character to execute the recognition processing of the ''KANJI'' character. CONSTITUTION:The ''KANJI'' characters 32 and ''KANJI'' characters 33 recorded in a business form 31 are converted into character pattern P which is an electric signal. A control part 13 controls so as to send a pattern corresponding to the ''KANA'' characters out of the character pattern P to a character recognition part 11 and to send a pattern corresponding to the ''KANJI'' to a rough sorting part 20. A character recognition part 11 outputs the recognized result of the ''KANA'' characters to a post-processing part 30 and the rough sorting part 20 selects respective proposed character groups corresponding to respective ''KANJI'' pattern from an unshown rough sorting dictionary memory. The post-processing part 30 selects respective proposed ''KANJI'' character groups corresponding to the recognized results of the ''KANA'' characters in the character recognition part 11.
