Hydroxyaminoalk(en)yl-phosphonic acids for formula (I) and their esters and salts are new: (where R1 is H or acyl; R2 is H, lower alkyl, lower aralkyl or acyl; A is lower alkylene, alkenylene or hydroxyalkylene). (I) have antimicrobial activity against various pathogenic microorganisms (unspecified). A typical cpd. is 3-(N-hydroxyamino)propyl-phosphonic acid. In an example, this is prepd. from NH2OH.HCl and 3-bromopropyl-phosphonic acid.
