PURPOSE:To obtain a circular polarizing plate having uniformly good retardation by forming a non-stretched plastic layer which generates double refraction when stretched onto the surface of at least either of a linear polarizer or polarizing plate and stretching the plastic layer in the direction of about 45 deg. to the axis of polarization. CONSTITUTION:The plastic film which has about 10-2,000mum thickness and about 100-200nm retardation when subjected to a stretching treatment used for the non-stretched plastic layer which generates double refraction when stretched. The layer consisting of, for example, polyester or polyamide is formed by a means such as casting, laminating or adhering onto the surface of at least either the linear polarizer or polarizing plate. The plastic layer is stretched about 0.1-30% in the direction of about 45 deg. to the optical axis of polarization of the polrizer or polarizing plate and is subjected to the heat treatment if necessary, by which the circular polarizing plate is is obtd. The retardation of the circular polarizing plate is not hampered by a solvent even if a solvent type adhesive agent is used in the stage of adhesion.
